Growing up, children have great aspirations as to what they want to be when they grow up. In fourth grade I decided that I wanted to be a horticulturalist (with some help from my mom). I loved my rock garden in the woods and wanted to work in a nursery with plants. By high school I was thinking that I would pass on biology...engineering was more my thing. I took a few engineering classes where we built balsa wood bridges and towers, CO2 cars, a small putt-putt golf station for a local event, and lots of other exciting projects! The third class even gave me an introduction to AutoCAD (a computer program that I now use every day). However, the most inspirational project in high school occurred in my Algebra I class. Ms. Hutson assigned a project: My Dream House Plans. We were to design the floor plan of our dream house and draw it on a poster to scale. I spent hours thinking of the rooms I would need and the interior design aspects of the house. It had to have a really big music room and a room dedicated to yoga! I remember sitting in the living room floor finishing up the project and telling my parents how much I enjoyed it. They mentioned that architects work on floor plans all the time. Little did I know that there would be many more floor plans to come in my life.
As my senior year approached I began looking into schools that offered degrees in architecture. Western Kentucky University had an Architectural Sciences program that was described as a bridge between design theory and construction practice. From that moment on, everything fell into place.Fast forward... Now I am a sophomore Architectural Sciences major at WKU and love it! I have also picked up a minor in Construction Management. I love the mixture of design theory and construction practice. The program truly gives the entire aspect of building from conceptualization to demolition or preservation. Hopefully, The Green Studio will be a way for me to keep a record of the projects and assignments I work on throughout the next few years.
